B.C.C. Is The Place To Be!
Benton Country Club is a semi-private, nine hole facility. This means that we are a primarily private club that allows some outside play. Memberships are very reasonably priced for both individuals and families. The club offers a full range of amenities including fully stocked pro shop, driving range, restaurant, and swimming pool. Golf lessons from PGA Professional Preston Baker are offered in the form of private or group sessions. A lifeguard and swimming lessons are also available for the swimmers. The golf course overlooks beautiful Lake Moses, providing very scenic views, especially during the evenings.
The members also enjoy a wide range of activities. For the Ladies, every Monday night and Wednesday morning the Ladies Golf Association meets for golf. They also have a stroke play club championship and match play championship. The men meet every Wednesday evening for the Men's Association league. Also, most Saturday and Sunday mornings some of the better players get together for a team and skins game. Starting this year on Friday nights, there will be a couples' league scramble with dinner to follow. The juniors participate in a summer camp and the Jr. Gold Cup. Friday mornings are also Jr. play days. Check out the complete list of BCC events on the available events sheet. Pick up an application and join the fun and tradition at the Benton Country Club! A Place of History and Tradition
One of the oldest golf courses in the Southern Illinois area, Benton Country Club boasts much tradition. Designed by an unknown architect and built mostly by locals in 1920, the golf course was laid out on the existing land without much change to the terrain. During that day, sand greens were pretty much the norm. The sand was mixed with oil to form the perfect consistency. Before each player putted, one of the caddies would roll the area between the players' ball and the hole to make it smooth. In 1940, the greens were changed over to grass as they are today. Although the course only plays to a little over 6,000 yards, it is characterized by narrow fairways and lined with large oaks, maples, and pines. The course is full of risk-reward situations that will challenge your courage on every shot. The large, historical clubhouse was built in 1921. Although a few additions have been added over the years, it still stands as a reminder of the good ole days. If only those walls could talk!
Benton Country Club is also the home of the longest running amateur tournament in the area. The Gold Cup has been played since 1947 and has attracted golfers from all over the country, even some eventual famous ones. Bob Goalby, an eventual Masters champion, played in the Gold Cup. Frank Conner, who is now on the Senior PGA
Tour, won the event in 1970. Tom Wargo has played in several of the Gold Cup Pro Am competitions. He now is a Senior PGA Tour player.
