Lynfred Winery Illinois Wine Selections
To learn more about Lynfred Winery visitwww.lynfredwinery.com.
Starting in an historic house that was originally built by the Hattendorf family in 1912, the Koehlers quickly went to work restoring the house and organizing a cellar to expand their "hobby" into a business. The one acre of land Lynfred currently occupies was originally owned by Colonel Roselle Hough, after whom the city was named. The leaded stained-glass windows, oak floors and moldings have been restored to their original state. The cellar walls, which are more than 18 inches thick, provide ideal temperature control for aging wines.
The expanded facility, which is connected by a vaulted barrel-aging tunnel, has increased our wine production and storage facilities. The new tasting room and gift shop are accented by many of the highlights of the "old" house, including beautiful stained-glass, burgundy velvet walls, and wonderful oaken stairwells and floors.
Lynfred Winery is celebrating its 23rd anniversary this year. The winery has come a long way from the original tasting room opened in 1979. Lynfred has now expanded into a 24,000-square-foot facility housing a beautiful Oaken tasting room and gift shop, which above, houses an elaborate and exclusive 4 suite bed and breakfast. Winemaker Extraordinare:
April of 2000, Lynfred welcomed a new addition to the family....Winemaker, Doug Seitz. That Southern accent of Doug's may lead you to believe he grew up in the South, but he was actually born March 24, 1971 in Chicago. In July of 1984, Doug made his first working vacation to Wildwood Vineyards in Tennessee where he participated in his first harvest and crush. Just as Horace was quoted in 65 B.C., "Bacchus opens the gates of the heart".. It was then and there that he knew he had found his calling and his love of wine, all at the age of 13. After high school graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corp and graduated from Parris Island and later the School of Infantry where he went to Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines. On October 14, 1993 he received an honorable discharge as a Corporal. Once again the harvest season was tugging at Doug's heart strings as he returned to Tennessee to assist in the '93 harvest. After harvest Doug returned to Chicago where he continued his education while working at the Chicago Health Club. It was there he met the other love of his life, an aerobic instructor named Kari. After about a year and a half Doug talked Kari into running away with him to Tennessee to follow his love of wine. He began working full time at Wildwood Vineyards and Tennessee Valley Winery. Early in 1998 he went to work for Mountain Valley Vineyards and Apple Barn Winery. He served as Secretary for the Tennessee Winegrowers Association. He also served a term as vice-president! At one point he worked full time with Mountain Valley and Apple Barn, part time with Tennessee Valley, consulting for Clinch Mountain Winery, and Vice President of TFWA and then....July 27, 1999 his son, Mason Douglas Seitz came into the world. While visiting his parents at Christmas of 1997 Doug met Fred. Two weeks before Mason was born Doug expressed his interest in moving back north so his son could grow up with his extended family. On March 17, 2000 Doug joined the Lynfred family.
