Prairie State Winery Illinois Wine Selections
Prairie State Winery and Prairie State Mercantile, established in 1998, is a family business dedicated to providing customers with quality products made in Illinois (the Prairie State).
We craft a wide range of wines on location, for a wide range of palates, all from Illinois grape varieties. From dry reds to sweet whites to old fashioned fruit wines, there is something for everyone.
In addition to our award-winning wines, our guests can peruse shelf after shelf of finer goods made in Illinois.
The Mercantile is located in the front half of our building. The pie-tin ceiling and creaky wood floors of our 1800's building recall a time of old general stores.
Good foods, pottery, soaps, baskets and other functional wares made by small Illinois businesses make for a unique shopping experience.
Some of the good foods available in the mercantile includes salsas and fruit butters from Galena Canning Co., Applejack cheese from Warren Cheese, canned relishes and vegetables from Kathy's Kitchen, and bread dipping oils from Diana's Specialty Foods.
The winery is located in the back half of our building and is open to viewing from our "scenic overlook". In the fall you can watch us crush and press the Illinois grown grapes, then pump the must (juice) into our stainless steel fermenters or our oak barrels. You can see us filter and bottle the finished wine throughout the year. We produce between 3000 and 4000 gallons of wine each year. As a boutique winery we craft our wines in small batches, allowing us to monitor wine quality and character closely. Our wines are made exclusively from Illinois grape varieties such as Chambourcin, Seyval, Chardonnel, Vidal, Niagara, and Marechal Foch.
At Prairie State Winery we pride ourselves on offering great wines in a comfortable small town setting.
Prairie State Vineyard is located 8 miles west of the winery on our farm in Kingston Township. In the spring of 2000 three acres were planted with grape varieties suitable for the northern Illinois climate. These varieties include Niagara, Marechal Fock, St. Pepin, Lacrosse, and St. Croix. We will be producing estate bottled wines by late 2003.
